I was reflecting on this tweet (and some of the feedback I received on it) and wanted to call out some of the things I’ve realized/learned. Thanks to @ArlanWasHere for going out of her way to give me some constructive feedback and having a discussion with me.
I realize that this msg implies that America is perfect now, & that can feel very incongruous with the present experience of many, with border internment camps, police shootings and institutionalized racism, and much more. Hearing this can then feel very alienating & exclusionary
I get that. And Arlan’s message to me was simply: do you want to spread an inclusionary message or not? And upon reflection, of course the answer I came to was that I want my platform to be an inspiration to all people of all backgrounds.
So if given another chance, I’d have followed my original tweet with:
And, like any startup, there is a lot still broken and there is a lot of work to do. But as long as we haven’t calcified into rigidity there is still hope that we can create a country with equal access to opportunity for all.
