Psssst...at the start of the Common Era, the Israelites were dark-skinned, much closer to black than anything you'd call white.

The modern ethnic group we call Jewish, which has lighter skin, evolved through centuries of diaspora and intermingling with the population of Europe.
Furthermore @iheartmindy, the pictures of Jesus as light-skinned and long-haired aren't based on any contemporary image of him. They're based on Medieval European painters mixing up extremely vague descriptions in the Bible with what they understood people to look like.
(Of course if we REALLY want to get into it, there's almost no secular evidence to support Jesus/Yeshua Ben Yosef having existed at all. In fact, there's literally more evidence that King Midas was a real person than that Jesus was.)

I'm with Sirota on this one. @GlennKessler's logic here — that it's "not meaningful" that the bottom 50% of earners have no net worth because they have a bunch of debt that's obscuring all the assets they *do* have — is a completely nonsensical take.
Kessler's argument here is basically that if you just discount all the debt poor people have, they're basically rich.

Yeah, and if you discount all the people Jeffrey Dahmer ate, he wasn't that bad a guy.
Yes. Poor people often have a lot of "assets" that they went into debt to acquire, and the balance sheet doesn't reflect that.

Kessler seems to think that makes Bernie's point irrelevant. I don't. In fact I think it's Kessler who is making distinctions that aren't meaningful.

1/ A lot of people have asked how white, rural areas turned against Democrats so sharply over the course of a few election cycles.

There's an answer that's been staring us in the face the whole time: it's a generational issue.

Let me explain.
2/ The reason Dems used to perform well in rural areas is the Greatest Generation — the voters who came of age in the Depression and saw FDR save farmers from economic annihilation. They carried with them the memory that they owe their communities and livelihoods to Democrats.
3/ But the last of these voters have now been dying off in recent years, to be replaced with Silents and Boomers — whose formative political years were marked by the Democratic Party fracturing over civil rights and Republicans busting the Solid South wide open in culture war.

This is a very dumb analogy. The American revolutionaries were resisting political and economic subjugation by the British. Central American migrants are fleeing poverty and gang violence caused by U.S. policies.

So by your logic, Central America should declare war on...us?
Also, the American revolutionaries were mostly wealthy landowners and the people they could rally to their cause, with an assist from the French government. Even if declaring war is the answer here, and they have someone to declare war on, declaring war is freaking expensive.
So yeah. It's clear you don't understand either the Revolutionary War OR the Central American migrant crisis. But thanks for playing.

The menōrah is a characteristic symbol of #Judaism. The six-branched lamp stand with a seventh central lamp was reportedly already present when the Israelites crossed into Samaria (#Canaan) and pitched their tabernacle tent in the town of Shiloh during the late 2nd millennium BC.
The #Hebrew name menōrah is related to the word נור (nōr), meaning light, made feminine (by means of the post-fixed ה) and prefixed with the particle מ, which denotes a noun of place. It literally means lamps-stand and is closely connected to the #Arabic word منار (manār).
In Exodus 25:31-32, God reveals the design of the menōrah to Moses: "Make a lamp stand of pure gold. (...) Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lamp stand; three on one side and three on the other." It was to light the tabernacle tent and the Temple of Jerusalem.

1) So I went to a different synagogue today and heard from one of the great #Jewish thinkers, leaders, scholars, good souls of our time, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin.

It is hard to overstate his influence but let's just say this was once in a lifetime.

2) Rabbi Telushkin was the scholar-in-residence at Congregation Beth Sholom in Potomac, Maryland. That means he gave multiple talks, Friday night, during services, after services, and again just before Havdalah (ritual ending the Sabbath).

I got to hear two of the talks.
3) Why should you care about this when there are more important things happening in the world?

I would argue that we spend a lot of time talking about the bad actors that have invaded our culture. We should talk about the good ones, more.

When we were small, they were Civil Rights workers.

Our early childhood was framed within & by the #CRM.
My mother wasn't well, but she did everything she knew how, to ensure that black Americans had the right to vote, a right she cherished because her mother had been a baby #suffragist and had fought for that right for women.
2/
The fallout for my parents was minor compared to their black friends, but it was violent and hate-strewn and they worried about their children being hurt.

And we were hurt. I got beaten up a lot because then as now I refused silence. I got in a lot of fist fights.

There are a lot of misconceptions about sunscreen and whether or not dark-skinned people need to wear it to prevent skin cancer. This NPR piece does a POOR job presenting the actual evidence. I think a TWEETORIAL is in order.
Melanoma is a potentially deadly form of skin cancer that has been linked to over exposure to UV rays from the sun. Thus, the promotion of sunscreen as an effective intervention to prevent melanoma is a reasonable public health message.
While this may be true for fair-skinned patients, i.e. white people, this is NOT the case for dark-skinned people, i.e. most black and brown people.
