THREAD: John Steele, the mastermind of Prenda Law, has been sentenced to 5 years in prison, per DOJ.

Prenda Law is the insane story about (now disbarred) lawyers who between 2011 and 2014 made porn films, uploaded them to Pirate Bay and other similar sites, then sued people who pirated those movies—unless they agreed to a $3,000 settlement.

Steele and his cohorts made over $6M.

@arstechnica coverage at the time: arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20…
@arstechnica Most of @arstechnica’s coverage of Prenda Law was deftly done by @joemullin (with occasional assists by yours truly, @binarybits, and @NateXAnderson).

@binarybits began covering it back in August 2012: arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20…
@arstechnica @joemullin @binarybits @NateXAnderson One of my favorite moments was the time that Prenda lawyers said that @EFF has “the same goals” as “terrorist group Wikileaks.”

@arstechnica @joemullin @binarybits @NateXAnderson @EFF Fun fact: @joemullin now works for @eff!

In any case, the 2012 - 2019 @arstechnica coverage is collected here. Enjoy.

@arstechnica @joemullin @binarybits @NateXAnderson @EFF Oh man, I totally forgot that I emailed once with Steele back in June 2013. He told me that he had "never uploaded a torrent in my life, I have never instructed anyone to do so.”
