THREAD: Tonight I'm covering the House vote on H.R. 986, or the Protecting Americans with Preexisting Conditions Act, a Democrat-sponsored bill aimed at stopping the Trump admin's guidance on ACA waivers/coverage.
The guidance allowed states to access waivers for some health care plans and/or promote other plans even if they did not meet the same level of coverage a patient might have had under ACA.
Dems argue the admin's maneuver to redefine coverage rules hurts patients because it opens the floodgates to poor care and predatory practices by states & insurers. Republicans argue HR986 is a sham bill, misleadingly named and only restricts patient choice.

I'll have the story for @CourthouseNews.
This is a contentious day.
Republicans are adamant that the bill eviscerates a state's rights to keep health insurance markets open thereby driving down "innovation." It also takes away a person's right to choose what provider they should have, they argue.
Democrats have staunchly rebuffed these claims during debate, saying the criticism is devoid of substance and that the rejection of the bill is GOP grandstanding; recall. Dems argue, 2 years ago, House Republicans voted to gut legislation protecting ppl w/ preexisting conditions.
Speaker Pelosi, from the floor notes how just last week, the Trump admin asked the courts to throw out every protection provided by the ACA.
HR 986 would reverse the Trump admin's "sabotage campaign" of ACA and blocks "cynical guidance" that opens the door to states to once again dismantle protections for those w/preexisting conditions, she says.
Pelosi adds: GOP wants to push families into junk plans that do not cover essential benefits.
Her opinion is not hers alone.
30+ groups representing ppl w/preexisting conditions have spoken out in favor for HR 986 incl. American Cancer Society, American Lung Association et al
"This dangerous action could take us back to the days when people with preexisting conditions were openly discriminated against and blatantly denied access to life saving care," the groups said.
