EU/27 have always been open to workable alternatives to the backstop as currently designed (eg Northern Ireland only mechanism is always on the table)

Key issue is not - never has been - a lack of openness but of workable alternatives that achieve same effect as current backstop
It is not the backstop as currently designed that is sacrosanct (again, Northern Ireland only option workable), but its purpose is sacrosanct: an insurance mechanism that avoids a hard border and protects the integrity of the single market in all scenarios & circumstances
This current dance is mostly about firmly placing the onus on Johnson/UK to come up with an alternative, and more importantly - given that alternatives are unlikely - of taking ownership and responsibility for upcoming decisions, and the consequences of these

Some Brexit thoughts.

At its core the deal negotiated by both sides is a balance between:

- UK red lines (no single market/customs union)
- EU27 mandate (single market integrity)
- joint commitment to no hard border in Northern Ireland

Any credible solution cannot ignore these
UK red lines are unlikely to change. If anything, they have become redder with Johnson.

EU27 mandate is unlikely to change. There really is no point to the EU without the single market. This is not ideology or philosophy, but hard economic and long-term interest.
Point of the backstop is to avoid a hard border under all circumstances. Any alternative must achieve this same effect. Saying, "we'll figure it out another day" doesn't do that. A time-limit defeats the point. Saying, "technological alternatives are available" is a falsehood

You may remember hearing about Gianluca Savoini from a recent @BuzzFeedNews' report, where Savoini was secretly recorded "negotiating the terms of a deal to covertly channel tens of millions of dollars of Russian oil money to Salvini’s Lega party."

The recording of this secret meeting was on 18 October 2018 in the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. A fragment of the booking data for Savoini in 2018/9 between Italy and Moscow shows his flights leading up to and after this now-infamous meeting.

Further: the help Giuliani sought from Ukraine govt. cd only have been obtained by leveraging the U.S.' strategic relationship w/, and influence over, Ukraine. They depend on us, among other things, for arms. Trump is extorting Ukraine for personal ends, using national power.
Trump's pro-Russian, anti-Ukraine stance was first seen in the weakening of the GOP platform's plank on arms for Ukraine. It was displayed again when he lectured G7 leaders that Crimea was Russian and they shd forget Russia's invasion and move on.
