EU response to Boris Johnson letter:

“The EU regrets that the new United Kingdom government wants to replace a legally operative solution with a commitment to try to find a solution - yet to be found - by the end of the transition period.”
“The EU also regrets that the new United Kingdom government does not provide any concrete proposals as to what these alternative arrangements could be.”
“Prime Minister Johnson’s proposal does not provide any such guarantees.”
EU27 also told that:

- The Withdrawal Agreement fully respects the Good Friday Agreement, and the backstop is the only means identified so far by both parties to avoid hard border.
- Johnson incorrect to state that the people of Northern Ireland have no influence over the legislation that would apply to them. There are specific governance arrangements contained in the Protocol
- Suggestion that two separate jurisdictions already exist and can be managed with an open border is misleading. EU law provides the common framework needed to enable frictionless trade between Member States. Without this common framework, checks and controls become necessary
