When you systematically dehumanize one group of people in order to galvanize another group against them, you get this. You can openly abuse the dehumanized and your tribe won't care. They'll be in favor of it, even. The cruelty... really is the point.
Trump, his party and right wing media are aggressively directing this dehumanization against brown immigrants, Muslims, black athletes (they are little more than gladiators. They should shut up and entertain us....!) pregnant women (they are just "hosts" not people) and liberals.
It's very effective if your goal is to embed Christian ethno-nationalism into the body politic against a tide of demographic change. Very, effective.
