No family should be separated b/c of their religion or where they're from—but that’s exactly what the Trump’s Admin's Muslim Ban is *still* doing.

We work directly with those affected by this racially discriminatory ban. We listen to their stories every day.

This is just one 👇🏾
Zach* came to the U.S. as a refugee from Iran 3 & half years ago. Before that he worked as a photojournalist in his home country of Iran.

During the Iranian Green Movement, he was working for a local newspaper which published some of his photos of people protesting.
Because of this ^ he was detained for a day and tortured.

Zach* was whipped 40 times for having done his job.

And to top things off: he faces a two year prison term if he returns to Iran.

I haven't said much about the #ConcentrationCampsForKids at the border. Every time I want to sit down and write, there's another fire to put out. An asylum claim referred to court. Another #MuslimBan separation. An ominous letter from a government agency. (That was just today.)
The camps are the natural extension of the evil system of for-profit detention, which in turn is built on the tragically wrong assumption that detention/deportation is the only cure for breaking an immigration law, which in turn presumes our immigration law is fair and sensible.
A college professor of mine said it best: "The painful lesson here is that mistaken ideology can produce thoughtless cruelty in gentle, kind-hearted people." In other words, how pretty much every genocide in history started.

I hope everyone is paying more attention to the health of our democracy in this administration. Today's 2 decisions from the #SupremeCourt have one thing in common: the fight to erase minority communities' political power will continue.
In Dept of Commerce v NY, #SCOTUS kept the #citizenship question on #Census2020 barred, for now.

In Rucho v. Common Cause, SCOTUS threw up its hands and said it couldn't decide partisan gerrymandering cases - allowing the devious process to continue.
The Sec of Commerce (who heads @uscensusbureau) thought it was worth the risk to not count immigrants fearful of responding to a #censuscitizenship question.

The Court, of course, didn't think much of any of his stated justifications, finding them "contrived" and pretextual.

I sued @UMich to unseal the papers of John Tanton, the racist architect of the modern anti-immigrant movement.

We can't wait until 2035 to understand how our immigration policy is informed by white nationalists.

Today, the Court ruled in our favor:…
The groups he created are the ones most directly responsible for the humanitarian catastrophe that is our immigration system. Tanton donated his papers to U of M, but sealed half of them until 2035. I sued to unseal them.…
The #TantonPapers shine a light on the conceptual underpinnings of the policies that rip families apart, jail children, and create a permanent underclass. The lower court dismissed my claim, saying the papers were not public records and hence immune from disclosure.

I appealed.

Biggest cheer during @iowademocrats chair @troymprice's opening remarks came after he predicted #Iowa Ds will "send @joniernst into an early retirement." #IASen #HallofFame
Sen @CoryBooker is 1st candidate to speak at #HallofFame event. (19 candidates will each have 5 minutes)
"We are being tested. This is a moral moment in America, and we must meet this test. I'm running for president because we can't take 4 more years of Donald Trump." #iacaucus
But @CoryBooker isn't just running to beat Donald Trump. That's the floor, not the ceiling. We can't just run on what we are against. Democrats need to tell people what we are for. "Every American needs health care, and make no mistake, abortion is health care." #iacaucus

I’ve observed Colorado @SenCoryGardner since his election. What I’ve seen has left me dismayed. Rather than building bipartisan bridges to get things done, Cory became a supine Trump yes-man. There are 1000s reasons he shouldn’t be re-elected. Here are 101: #VoteCoryOut #COsen
#1: Even though he was elected by the narrowest of margins in 2014 in a state that has since voted for Hillary in 2016 & a democratic state govt trifecta in 2018, Cory continues to act as if he has a mandate from the white nationalist alt-right. #VoteCoryOut #cosen
#2: Cory Gardner has consistently voted for the extreme Trump agenda. During the 2019-2020 Congress, he’s voted with Trump over 90% of the time. During Trump’s 1st two years, Cory’s voting record was over 95% in line with Trump. #VoteCoryOut #cosen

It has been a big day for NAFTA 2.0, and not in good way.

Here's a thread on developments of the last 24 hours - including Pence's Canadian visit, Lighthizer's submission of NAFTA text to Congress, and Trump's impetuous launching of a trade offensive against Mexico...
Pence's Canada trip seemed like a desperate move to reignite momentum - given what Democrats are demanding (e.g. rolling back protections for Big Pharma), the Republicans don't want to give.
As I told @Naomi_Powell when we spoke early yesterday, “if you’re running a campaign with targets who won’t talk to you, what do you do? You go to Ottawa, fill the time.”

In initial interview before reaching ambulance, @MsNazContractor, playing the Muslim councilwoman whom Detective Carisi (@PeterScanavino) has already informed us is famous for anti-Semitic remarks, tells him & Detective Rollins (@KelliGiddish) that "those people" are responsible
for her assault. Thus, she confirms her antisemitism. The councilwoman is an barely concealed stand-in for Ilhan Omar, a representative to the US House of Representatives from Minnesota's 5th District. @nbcsvu @SVUWritersRoom
Min 0458: A reporter asks Chief Dodds (@petergallagher): "Councilwoman Nasar is an on-the-record anti-Semite. Can you comment?" Chief Dodds doesn't contradict the reporter's assertion, thus implicitly confirming it.

Some corners of the internet are attacking @RepEBJ for inviting her constituent, the beloved TX Imam @omarsuleiman504 to give a prayer to Congress yesterday. You might not know who he is, so I'll tell you.
He's known in the Muslim community for being a founder of @MUHSENORG which helps and trains mosques to serve Muslims with special needs and of @yaqeeninstitute which publishes papers on issues facing US Muslims.
Muslims also know him as an ally to Muslim women, bc Sh. omar was one of the first US Muslim religious leaders to take a private and public stand against another TX preacher accused of sexually predatory behavior two years ago.

1/ #StephenMiller has given an exclusive interview to Tucker Carlson's dumbass website for angry white supremacists, because of course he has. I've clicked on it so you don't have to, and here's all you need to know.
2/ Just to get this out up front: Stephen Miller is a 33-yr-old swamp monster whose only major pre-Trump CV item was as press sec for Sen. #JeffSessions. He is not a lawyer & has no serious understanding of imm. policy. His career has been built on bullying & white supremacy.
3/ We now know (as I suspected at the time) that Miller & Steve Bannon pulled a series of all-nighters writing the disastrous first #muslimban--without consulting any lawyers, let alone anyone from the agencies which would be responsible for it. Keep that in mind as we proceed.

I'm very excited to announce that State Senator @JenniferBoysko (SD-33) endorses our campaign in my bid for the Democratic nomination for the VA House of Delegates in District 87!

Boysko took over the state Senate seat vacated by @JenniferWexton, now our Congresswoman from #VA10.

“When I was a newly elected House of Delegates member in 2013, one of my first priorities was ensuring that our most vulnerable communities could thrive in VA," said Boysko.
"In my advocacy at the state legislature, Hassan Ahmad helped me to lift up and share the experiences of Virginia residents affected by policies like the Virginia DREAM Act and driver’s licenses for the undocumented community."

Lots of thoughts running through my head today, the 2nd anniversary of the #MuslimBan .

My daughter who asked me "Why does he hate Muslims?" on seeing the future President call to shut down Muslim immigration. She dismissed him: 'He doesn't need to be part of the conversation.'
I remember the heroes that showed up at Dulles and beyond. The ones who didn't have relatives or clients who'd be impacted by banishment from our country, but showed up anyway. The man who yelled "Welcome to America!" to everyone who walked through the int'l arrival doors.
The chants welcoming refugees. The multilingual signs, the law firm that grew organically out of the arrivals hall. And my colleagues who dropped everything to rush to Dulles. We did better than "access to counsel:" we brought counsel to those who needed it, when they needed it.

.@Alyssa_Milano makes a strong point about the connection between @realDonaldTrump 's #MAGA hats and KKK white hoods. It's a point that can't be ignored. (thread)
If MAGA hats are not analogous in many ways to the Klan's white hoods, why does former KKK grand wizard David Duke hold the #MAGA hat boy out as a symbol to rally around by having his picture on his Twitter header?

If MAGA hats are not deeply connected to the KKK, why did David Duke say that he and @realDonaldTrump share the same message?…

Our federal government reopens, albeit for 3 weeks. On the second anniversary of his first #MuslimBan, Trump & Co. suffer a humiliating loss.

No wall. (And we'll end the ban soon, too.)

This all started with a bad idea: that a wall was necessary to stop an invasion.
It's white nationalism, which isn't known for its great ideas. But the idea stuck because it was repeated, playing on people's prejudices, permeating political discourse until it became policy.

But there was no alternative given. We just called it what it was: a bad idea.
We who believe in quaint ideas like due process and equality have spent the bulk of our professional lives since that night at the nation's airports scrambling to put out fires caused by bad ideas. We raced to the border. We spoke, we wrote, we advocated, we sued.

@FAIRImmigration, founded by Dr. John Tanton, is a mouthpiece of white nationalist rhetoric. But it's more than that: it injects its foul ideology into actual policy.

One (latest) example: Temporary Protected Status, or TPS. Read what a federal judge found:

On p29 of the decision, the Court gives yet another example of Acting Secy Elaine Duke, who is supposed to make a dispassionate assessment of conditions on the ground in determining TPS eligibility, said "this conclusion [to end TPS] is the result of an America first view..."
Curious, because America was founded on ideals of welcoming the forcibly displaced. I'm not sure what "American first" has to do with terminating TPS.

If the White House is influencing the decision, we have a problem, because the White House has made A LOT of racist statements.

The decision by @British_Airways & @airfrance to end flights to #Iran—following an earlier decision by @KLM to do the same—will make it harder for the Iranian diaspora to visit friends & family in Iran, ensuring their further isolation. 1/
These decisions come amid increasing sanctions pressure. Ordinary Iranians are under siege from all directions; at home by repressive forces, by sanctions & Trump’s #MuslimBan; & now some of the few remaining bridges to the outside world are disappearing. 2/
The world has a core interest in the well-being of Iranians—a neighboring people with whom we must build bridges, not destroy them. 3/

As a practicing immigration lawyer, I have grown weary of the comment, "So, business must be pretty good with Trump in office?"

Do oncologists get happy when the cancer rate spikes?
We're in the business of alleviating human suffering by providing a secure path to prosperity: lawful immigration status in a great country. For victims, families, entrepreneurs, workers...It should not be a minefield, but under Trump, that is exactly what it is becoming.
So what's it like practicing immigration law in this administration?

We are having oral argument in our case against @Umich to unseal the #TantonPapers:

Court of Appeals of Michigan

on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 11 AM.
Behind modern players like Kris Kobach, Otis Graham, Jeff Sessions, Steven Miller, and Steve Bannon is a trifecta of anti-immigrant organizations: FAIR, NumbersUSA, and CIS. All three of these organizations stem from the same man: Dr. John Tanton.…
