While we wait for the President's announcement on a citizenship question for the Census, let's do some background in a thread 1/
First, a citizenship question is legit on the Census. The Supreme Court ruled in late June that the Trump Administration hadn't followed the rules to do it properly. 2/

The last time the citizenship question appeared on the 'short form' - the Census questionnaire that goes to everyone - was in 1950 4/
The citizenship question was still asked on the 'long form' - which goes to about 1 of every 6 people. This is the 2000 long form census.gov/dmd/www/pdf/d-…
By 2010, the 'long form' had been replaced by the American Community Survey, which is done yearly. It includes a citizenship question. It's question 8 in 2007 www2.census.gov/programs-surve…

To recap - the citizenship question has not been on the short form since 1950.

It has been on the long form - then the ACS survey - for many years.
