An underappreciated aspect of Trump's presidency is his propensity for running away when he thinks he's about to lose a fight. He runs and hides, and then shouts and screams.
Sadly, the two people in the country best positioned to aggressively exploit this weakness—Pelosi and Schumer—have very little interest in doing so.
(They could exploit it not only by setting up such confrontations, but also by blustering back when they sense he's about to cave.)
Trump: "I'm going to do this stupid thing!"
Pelosi and/or Schumer: "He's not going to do that stupid thing, because it's stupid and also because he's a gutless weasel."
Trump: *doesn't do stupid thing*
Pelosi and/or Schumer: "See?"
Pelosi and/or Schumer: "He's not going to do that stupid thing, because it's stupid and also because he's a gutless weasel."

Pelosi and/or Schumer: "See?"
"TRUMP CAVES AGAIN" should have been the banner headline of the citizenship question press conference, as it should have been the banner headline a hundred times before.
He's incredibly dangerous, but he's also incredibly weak-willed. Emphasizing the first trait makes his supporters like him more. So maybe lean into the second a bit?
Anyway. I usually don't do the armchair quarterback thing, for obvious reasons. I'm not going to start making a habit of it. But I had to vent for a minute.
