Academic seminars: rare & low; up to $2k
Academic public lectures: more common; $1-5k
Industry: I don't do these
Non-profits: almost never $
For extended visit w multiple talks & meetings, $ more common
Best ever: $25K for a 10-day visit to a foreign uni 😳

About 15 years ago a Harvard economist told me he wouldn't give a talk in Europe for < $10K plus expenses
Some foreign unis have an easier time with a honorarium than with reimbursing unusual travel requests (eg larger hotel room for family, or getting a AirBnB)

Re travel:
Do NOT get the cheapest flight to a talk. Get the shortest. It's YOUR time.
For flights> 8 hours I request first/biz class. Need to sleep on flight if I'm going to arrive & immediately start working
