#NationalDiabetesWeek we heard from @DiannaMagliano during 2002-2013, there was 6 times more likely progression of diabetes to kidney failure in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
We know from #eGFRstudy led by Maple-Brown @MenziesResearch, the annual decline in kidney function is 3 times than expected for healthy aging. Having diabetes was a strong indicator of loss of kidney function #NationalDiabetesWeek
We know acute kidney injury is a potentially modifiable risk of loss of kidney function. In the NT, infections and heart disease were key contributors to AKI and needing to start dialysis #NationalDiabetesWeek
But the presence of inflammation detected by blood test without overt infection is likely to contribute to low kidney function. Dr Elif Ekinci @Elif_Diabetes & Dr Elizabeth Barr #eGFRStudy @MenziesResearch published this;
In #eGFR3Study, vimeo.com/323352843 (cohort grant underreview), we will partner with individuals, communities & #healthservice providers to investigate how #AKI #inflammation #diabetes #eGFR #hearthealth #accessiblecare explains long term kidney health #NationalDiabetesWeek
High quality relevant research to slow progression of kidney disease and reduce impact diabetes is a high priority (Policy, activity, accountability) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and families vimeo.com/343341838

Enabling these policy recommendations to activities for #kidneyhealth can be supported by implementation of #RenalHealthRoadMap instigated by @KenWyattMP. The RoadMap is under review by #AHMAC Aust Health Min Advisory Council, who will report Sept 13 2019.
We can monitor and report on how successful these specific targeted #kidneyhealth innovations in early risk stage like #diabetes and early #ckd are i.e with innovative Policy, activity, new ways of funding through clinical quality registries @ANZDATARegistry
Hence @ANZDATARegistry Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Working Group partnered with @LowitjaInstitut @MenziesResearch in the #CatchingSomeAir project to define #bestpractice #datasovereignty (Thanks @SummerMayFinlay) #NationalDiabetesWeek
