Hi - thanks to @caitduffy49 & @annetiquate for organizing #HCTwitterConf19 & for including me. I'm a Prof @EGLStonyBrook, affiliated w/ @sbuhistory. This morning I'm going to show off the HC sites for 2 books, 1 just published and 1 just started. 1/13

Thru this self-promotional exhibition, I'll highlight 2 WordPress plugins, Zotpress & @TimelineJS. I hope to demo how an HC site can not only complement but also amplify a book-project, in this case through interactive bibliographies and displays. 2/13

Allegories of Encounter: Colonial Literacy and Indian Captivities, published Jan '19 by @uncpressblog and @oieahc, is about literacy practices in colonial captivity narratives, & about "reception allegories": the story you're reading is also about you. 3/13 #HCTwitterConf19 Cover of Allegories of Encounter: Colonial Literacy and Indian Captivities, depicting a detail from the New England Primer woodcut alphabet, and a detail an illustration from a history of King Phillips War featuring Mary Rowlandson in a canoe with her captors.
Much of my research for the book took place online, & I wanted to footnote e-versions of my sources. However, the prevalent practice in scholarly publishing would be to cite the print version of this captivity narrative, for eg. 4/13 #HCTwitterConf19 bit.ly/2JPuscX Title page of A Narrative of the Incidents Attending the Capture, Detention and Ranson of Charles Johnston (1827), from the Internet Archive.
The press and I compromised: I included a "Note on the Sources" and a list of e-archives and e-sources. Later, I blogged about "Digital Sources, Analog Citations" for @OIEAHC. The note & post both refer readers to my hc site. 5/13 #HCTwitterConf19 bit.ly/2XPKihR Screenshot from published note on sources, containing text:
My site links to my profile & publisher's page, & to reviews (TBD). Its Bibliography page allows users to search my library and to see the works-cited for each chapter, with links to sources. Please have a quick look and try it out. 6/13 #HCTwitterConf19 bit.ly/AEbiblio Screenshot of Bibliography page from AllegoriesofEncounter.hcommons.org
My library is stored in @zotero, the brilliant tool I use for all my research. Zotero is integrated with the site using the plugin Zotpress. 7/13 #HCTwitterConf19 zotero.org
You can also use Zotpress to add in-text citations and bibliographies to the content of your blog or website. I'm really grateful that HC included this plugin in their platform. Here's a helpful how-to page. 8/13

I'm also using Zotpress to integrate my HC site with my Zotero library for a new project, The High School Canon: Literature and American Life, from the Cold War to the Common Core (closer to Allegories of Encounter than it seems). 9/13

I've found that Zotpress pairs well with another plugin, @TimelineJS. Here's a page that employs both: the timeline plugin generates the
interactive exhibit "Macbeth: an American Tragedy," and zotpress publishes the references. 10/13

Just as Zotpress publishes content stored in Zotero, TimelineJS publishes content stored in a Google spreadsheet. It takes some tweaking & works better with certain themes (this site uses Vantage Premium). Here's what the code for the page looks like. 11/13

I've also used these plugins for another exhibit, "The Great Gatsby Across the Changing Horizons of Student Readers." The Macbeth and Gatsby timelines both illustrate the conceptual framework for a "pedagogical reception study." 12/13

That's it for now. I welcome comments and questions - for the rest of this session and anytime thereafter. Thanks for attending, and enjoy the rest of #HCTwitterConf19. (I should finally attach a GIF but it would be out of character.) 13/13
