One of Philip Roth's IBM Selectrics just went for $4800 at auction. His Yogi Berra bat was $4k.
Second IBM Selectric is up now, went for 5k.
The manual Olivetti is up next. Will be curious to see if it goes for more than IBM's. Oops, yep, already at 9k.
Roth's Olivetti goes for $17,500. He probably wrote most of his best known stuff on the IBM's, but the romance of the manual is hard to beat. Now his luggage is up, including a tag filled out by Roth.
Here's an interesting one. Roth's porch/patio furniture. Sold for $550. Honestly, that's a bargain if you need wicker patio furniture with turquoise cushions.
A very utilitarian computer desk up now. Formica top, holes for putting cables through. Says it's a Herman Miller computer stand. $175. First item to go below estimate that I've seen.
Some reasonably nice Philip Roth guest bedroom furniture is going sort of cheap. I think you'd pay the auction price if you were shopping at a nice antique shop, but what do you know?
Lot 72 of the Philip Roth auction is the couch from his studio. No pre-auction online bids. Look at this beauty. I think you could maybe get a DNA sample from it and clone the man himself.
Now up in the Roth auction is a cool looking adjustable 19th c. bedside table that I put an online bid of $100 in on. Within seconds the bidding is over $1000. Oops, $2000.
So far the most expensive Roth items by far are the typewriters and his Yogi Berra bat. Some of the nice furniture goes for a good amount too. I still have an online bid on a desk lamp (lot 100) to come. On lot 40 now.
Philip Roth's motorized standing desk goes for $125. Much less than one would cost new. Interesting to see what people think holds value. Seems like he must've worked at that desk, particularly with his back problems later on.
Gross leather couch from Roth's studio going up imminently. The matching chair went for $1100.
Couch goes for less than chair, $900. The cost/difficulty of transport might've had something to do with it. Also has some truly horrifying stains.
Lamp from Philip Roth estate that looks like something you could pick up at Target goes for $2k. I'm assuming the original designer is someone special.
We're very close to the Philip Roth estate Dick and Pat Nixon collector plate going up for bids.
Chipped commemorative Nixon plate in Philip Roth auction goes for $450. Trying to imagine how often Roth showed it to houseguests and had a good chuckle over it.
Desk lamp I put an online bid on went for triple my attempt, $300. There goes my dream of an all-Roth desk set.
Coming towards the end of the Philip Roth items. Last one I'm intrigued by is a framed photo of Franz Kafka. Online bids already have it up to $550. Lot 116. On 105 now.
Kafka photo goes for $1300.
Unsigned portrait of Roth threatening the Olivetti for the high water mark. Closing in on $15k.
It's a rap on the Philip Roth auction. His manual typewriter was the most valuable item.
