@mcsweeneys @KnowingPirates I have read "On Crocodiles" probably thirty times, maybe more, and every single time it moves me to tears. It's a goddamn miracle of an essay about some of the miracles you'll sometimes see in the world.

@karenraycosta There's already some comments on the piece where it's apparent that @karenraycosta's point bounced right off. They argue that their policies work to benefit "most" students (w/o evidence). But there is a way to look at this problem that provides freedom to work for all students.
@karenraycosta You gotta change your frame for looking at this issue, which includes not focusing on the note taking itself (as @karenraycosta shows). There's no perfect solution, but it disheartens me that the first comments show instructors who are unwilling to do the work.

Unethical gaming of the system that should be condemned, but this also illustrates how f'd up college costs have gotten. These are supposed to be rich people and they claim to need to manipulate the system in this way to get by. propublica.org/article/univer…
I make no excuse for their behavior, but for me, this illustrates why we need full measures like Warren's plan. The more well-heeled will always find ways to game the system to their advantage. By making the ability to pay for college scarce, we beget this nonsense.
Rather than worrying about people who could pay for college getting something they don't need, we could make post secondary ed the public good it should be. Every fix advantages the wealthy anyway. Why not commit to a real change?

Under normal circumstances I am hesitant to drop a Joan Didion comparison, but for @annawiener and her forthcoming "Uncanny Valley" I'm forgoing that caution because it's the most apt comparison I can make. I tore through this book. indiebound.org/book/978037427…

@annawiener
offers more than Didion in that she's a much more direct participant in what she's chronicling. She's not hanging out looking for a story. She's living her life. There's much more memoir than something like Slouching Towards Bethlehem.
@annawiener The clarity and acuity @annawiener brings to the Silicon Valley scene makes me feel as though I have a much deeper understanding of the dynamics at work there. She doesn't pick villains so much as expose our collective capacity for villainy.

(A microburst Twitter essay--to be finished before I'm done with my cough drop)

I just had an epiphany: #beautiful has become my new favorite word. That may seem strange given my circumstances. In June 2017 I was diagnosed with incurable stage IV #lungcancer.
I naively thought that maybe my lifetime of being a health and fitness junkie would insulate me from such a medical fate. Wrong. And So here I am, fifty-one years old and not sure how much time I have left on earth. I know I could, or maybe should, feel angry, cheated, jaded.
But I don't. I have this epiphany that my new favorite word is beautiful and I'm not sure why. There is nothing beautiful about what I've gone through since my diagnosis--lots of physical and emotional distress to be sure. But yet, I keep find

2/ It all began freshman year. I met @realYDB who was fearlessly conservative and we quickly became well-known & unliked on campus. Our peers began attacking her on campus & online. I remember sitting with her at lunch as people yelled & made fun of her. campusreform.org/?ID=6117

TBH at this point I think the routinization of mass shootings in the public consciousness is just another way our society sustains and justifies broader affective and material economies of misery and precarity
