It is very hard for a CEO to be a great leader inside of their company. One reason why is that very few people inside an org feel comfortable providing honest feedback and holding them accountable.
This is dangerous because often times you think you are doing well when you are actually doing poorly. One strong hint that you need to change is when good people decide to leave your org.
They will almost never straight say it’s because of you to your face...
One painful mistake I have seen time and time again are CEOs who are not good examples to their employees. Especially in companies that are under 100 people where the CEO is very visible.
Being a bad example inside of your company can be a subtle thing. Do you take credit or give it? Do you participate in any shit work or do you delegate it all? Do you show up? Do you seek to increase your personal brand at the potential detriment of your company’s brand?
Do your employees feel like they can connect with you personally?
Often times you know that you are doing these things and just come to think it’s okay because no one calls you out on it. But trust me, all of your good people keep a mental accounting of your work. And when you stay in the red for too long they will leave.
So be honest with yourself and hold yourself accountable.
