One of the questions I have been fielding a lot about Huawei is whether Trump's ban is simply nationalistic protection concerned about Huawei getting the lead in 5G? This is a very valid and understandable question given what we know about Trump. My response is that while 1/n
it may be a nice second order benefit, I strongly doubt this is a primary focus of the action. For starters, the biggest beneficiaries of this order are not US companies but European companies. Most importantly however, is that very few people have the long term perspective 2/n
of knowing who Huawei really. To help provide some perspective, I did date range Google searches using "US Huawei security" with targeted date ranges and took one of the top 10 results so that you can get a sense of how deep seated a security concern Huawei has been over 3/n
time to the US government and the actions the Huawei has been involved in. I should note, this is not exhaustive, excludes other countries concerns, and is taken only from general news sources not specialized reports. They are in rough chronological order. Enjoy 4/n

You may not like Trump and this threat is by no means a Trump 2020 advertisement, but if anything the US government has bent over backwards to avoid angering China and Huawei for a long time looking the other way and their behavior. Let me repeat this is not remotely 7/n
exhaustive and only covers through Obama but gives you an idea the type of actor Huawei is and the bipartisan nature of how the US government has thought about Huawei as a threat. Hopefully this provides some perspective. Done
