When the government comes knocking, who will defend your data? In this year's edition of ¿Quién Defiende Tus Datos? by Derechos Digitales, ISPs in Chile have made considerable strides forward. eff.org/deeplinks/2019…
Claro leads the pack in protecting its customers’ data, with WOM close behind. Both have privacy-protective policies, publish clear law enforcement guidelines, and have made significant progress in user notification—a real breakthrough for user’s rights throughout Latin America.
We are pleased to see WOM, VTR, and Claro stand by the user’s right to notification. For years, Latin American ISPs have been reluctant to notify users of government data requests. Now, this year's report shows Chile making significant improvements.
Other ISPs, however, lag behind on notification and our other criteria. VTR, Movistar, and GTD Manquehue still have a long way to catch up.
There is still a clear gap between Chilean ISPs when it comes to defending users' privacy, but improvements in this year's report indicate progress towards toward transparency and accountability across the industry.
