This is horrible. The death penalty:

- risks executing innocent people
- costs a lot of resources
- emotionally damages the families of crime victims
- is ineffective and inefficient
- is often decided unfairly or arbitrarily and
- expands the power of government.

There is a lot of misleading death penalty mythology floating around after today’s news about the restart of federal executions. Let’s set the record straight and look at some facts about capital punishment:
Each state has its own legal system. Some states have a death penalty and others do not. The federal government also has its own legal system. People can be criminally charged in federal courts with breaking federal laws. The death penalty is legal in the federal system.
Right now, there are approximately 2,600 people on death rows across the United States. 61 of those people are on the federal death row in Terre Haute, Indiana. It’s those 61 people who are impacted by today’s announcement.

In my neighbourhood there was a serial sex predator breaking into women's homes and sexually assaulting them in their own beds. It's bad enough that women routinely have to take more precautions than men to do basic things like go for a walk or a jog. 1/ #sexualassault #crime
I can't describe to you what it's like to be afraid to do something as necessary as falling asleep in your own bed at night. This is what happened to many women in my neighbourhood. 2/ #VAW

2/Louisiana has had the death penalty on its books since 1977. But until very recently we never knew what it cost the state. A few years ago @JPMorrell put together a commission to answer this question. I was on it. We bogged down in politics and never finished our work
