Killer whales have good eyesight, but it doesn’t really help in the turbid, dark waters of B.C. They rely on echolocation and that’s why orca researcher John Ford says the underwater noise can have such a great impact on them.
So why does this matter? There are approximately 76 endangered southern resident killer whales living in local waters.

Compare their foraging areas to a map of shipping routes heading in and out of Metro Vancouver, and it’s kind of hard to tell the two maps apart.
