I don't know if this is a secret pleasure anyone else has, but it gives me so much joy when download links (like for older software or retro samples or whatever) on websites archived by the Wayback Machine work.
It's how I have a whole archive of software and apps for Palm Pilot that I swear I will install on the two working Palm Pilots I have lying around one of these fucking days.
Like one day I'll be that eccentric cyberpunk bitch that refuses to use any of the scheduling apps on my phone and busts out with a literal Palm Pilot like yeah bitch this thing also plays Shadowgate and Rick Dangerous. Got them custom icons and shit. Top of the line 1999.
One day, I want to make a distinct text adventure game that doesn't use graphics (or as little as possible) and release version of it for completely bonkers devices. Palm Pilot, TI-83+ Graphing Calculator, Commodore 64 disk, Atari Portfolio, etc lmao.
Apparently there is a Palm Pilot configuration and file management app in the Linux Software Manager so I guess it might be worth the trouble to snag a USB to serial port converter so I can hook the Palm Pilot cradle to my main desktop.
Couldn't mention it last night cuz I was on a Twitter ban, but I managed to get an old Palm OS emulator running in Linux 64. Will make testing out stuff a lot easier.
As a bonus, managed to find a Palm OS exclusive version of Shadowgate with some of the puzzles jumbled up and the graphics are pretty sweet.
Considering picking up a copy of PHEM for the sake of screencasting the Palm OS Shadowgate (via Google Play) and other Palm OS games (still haven't found satisfying screencasting software for Linux yet). Only hesitant because I'm just not a fan of mobile emulators in general.
While I was browsing, found this graphing calculator emulator which *only* supports Hewlett-Packard black-on-green calculators and no TI-80+ models. Really strange design choice there.
Here we go, this is exactly my kinda shit. Even includes a screenshot of a TI-83 playing Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. This one knows what I wanna see in an emulator. I could screencast me playing Doom on one of these bad boys.
Oh this is interesting. This app converts .TAP files (a type of ROM file specifically for tape drive games) into an audio file you can record on a cassette tape and then load on an IRL tape drive computer (C64, TRS-80, etc). Might be useful to #retrogames #retrogamer folks.
So... Shadowgate for the Palm Pilot is son of a bitch hard. It requires a lot more inventory juggling than any version I have played (torches are constantly burning out and inventory space is limited). Also maybe because I'm playing it on Palm IIIc mode it is always crashing.
Still, these are the best looking graphics of any Shadowgate port I have ever seen before the 2015 reboot. Pretty much what is keeping me going.
Looks like the torches shouldn't normally burn out as fast as they do, it's just that the emulator is running so much faster than the normal cpu clock. Unfortunately the emulator has no slowdown feature. Maybe when I actually try to screencast it the slowdown from that will help.
