I think it was when we watched an empowered minority white supremacist party seize power over the course of several decades, and the relative willingness of fellow citizens and establishment institutions to normalize it all, David, it might have been that.
There's a strong and well-tapped market in America for blasé sociopathic unconcern, filtered by an even modulated tone until it seems reasonable enough to be palatable.

Is my theory.
People are looking for a reason to not give a shit about atrocity.

Some are able to just unplug.
Some can metabolize pure uncut Q propaganda
Functional addicts turn to Fox and its garish simulacrum of news.
More sensitive souls require Brooks & Co for their self-delusion.
Brooks is the guy who OBVIOUSLY wants equality and justice, and OF COURSE is concerned about the daily outrages

But we just have to take it slow, is all. Reasonable and slow. Not today. Tomorrow.

He's the conscience's snooze alarm, and he'll never stop giving 5 more minutes
This is how you can tell the grift. The right's authoritarian nationalistic lurch is always backgrounded as a mere assumed unpleasantness and thus normalized—while any opposition to it is always the proper subject of scrutiny & concern for reasonable souls
"OF COURSE I'm against them coming first for the assylum seekers, and then for the Muslims, and then for the naturalized citizens ... but what I'd like to talk about today is the sudden sharpness of tone coming from those who say something about it."
“If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.”

PS— The reason the Biden campaign is so offensive is the same reason that Brooks & Co Distillery advocate for him. His pitch is for a return to normal.

But “normal” simply means a time when people who know better could comfortably pretend they didn’t.
Biden locates the problem exclusively with Trump precisely because Trump’s grotesquerie reveals how obviously psychopathic the “normal” practiced unconcern truly is.

He doesn’t believe a Republican fever will break with Trump gone. He just hopes the game will get polite again.
I have no desire to return once again to a normal where we’re all comfortably numb to a societal assumption that there are people who matter and people who don’t, and I have absolutely zero patience for people who openly long for it.
