Brian, Marion - IMO, you 2 are at extremes and I think of myself somewhere in between.
To Marion - Yes, there are reported harms of statins, no doubt, but if statins were a poison, as you consider it, the adverse effects would be more debilitating and more common.
To Marion, as well, it appears to me that the majority of people have neither benefit nor adverse effects of statins. IMO, the physiology adapts to the statin-induced metabolic intrusion. and functions at a reasonable level.
This of course does not mean I favor statin usage, it means a rigorous assessment of statin adverse effects does not result in massive evidence of harm. The evidence of⬆️T2D is incontrovertible, but may affect only 5% of users, but long-term T2D w/ statins is inknown
To Brian - I think you, like many docs, want ammunition in your arsenal against CVD. You're willing to accept the LDL-CHD theory and statin benefits, while ignoring valid arguments against the LDL-CHD link and you prefer to focus on small real benefits & minimize adverse effects.
also for Brian - clearly the link of LDL-C to CHD is tenuous at best, with some preferring LDL-P (discuss another time). I guess it doesn;t matter how statins work, if you praise the 1-5% real benefit, so what if it's LDL-based or by other mechanisms.
Bottom line: I favor educating ppl on the data, to show AR & RR, to share confirmed adverse effects, & most of all, that show it is an evidence-free zone as to whether there is any benefit for any person (pre-/post-MI) on #LCHF to take a statin

@eatmostlyfatali @FatEmperor & for Marion-There are instances where harm has been documented in CHD trials: CAST w/ anti-arrhymics, Clofibrate & Torcetrapib, all caused more deaths in treated v placebo. Pharma documented lack of effect of CETP meds. So if statins were truly poison, I think we would know it.
