1) I don't know why I get linked to Koushik's tweets. I shouldn't engage him - he's a nice and sincere person, and has the best of intentions for his patients, but I prefer to connect with scientists and open-minded people, not a priest with daily WFPBD sermons.
2) What Koushik doesn't get is that the source of protein just doesn't matter. People can be healthy as vegetarians, which explains his good health and the good health of his disciples. People can also be healthy consuming meat of any kind, including steak.
3) What really matters? The road to good health contains potholes filled with sugar, or more generally, excess consumption of food that raises blood sugar. Vegetarians, as well as carnivores, can be obese with T2D simply because they consume an excess of high GI foods.
4) e.g., "Conclusions: The results from this systematically searched meta-analysis of RCTs support the idea that the consumption of 0.5 servings
of total red meat/d does not influence blood lipids and lipoproteins
or blood pressures. Am J Clin Nutr doi: 10.3945/ajcn.116.142521
5) is the effect limited to only 0.5 servings? no:
"The highest category of red meat consumption (.3 servings of red meat/d) showed no negative effects on blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations and blood pressures and resulted in higher HDL concentrations."
6) Another study, which Priest Koushik will ignore is one in which obese ppl with CVD were assigned a diet with "one half of all calories as saturated fat, primarily as red meat and cheese. Eggs and other low-fat forms of protein were allowed, regardless of cholesterol content."
7) that 80% of those that had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome no longer satisfied MS criteria after only 6 weeks will not change his WFPLD beliefs. Koushik is committed to one road to dietary heaven, and no science can change his beliefs
Mayo Clin Proc. 2003;78:1331-1336
8) This tweet series is not for Koushik. It's for the ppl who have been misinformed by WFPBD priests, including @drjkahn, and the other plant-based diet advocates who have promoted the false belief that meat creates potholes along the road to dietary heaven.
9) Meanwhile the solid science showing that minimizing sugar (and likely food deep-fried in vegetable oil), weight control, some exercise, sunlight and stress control is the recipe for good health.
10) Finally, the WFPBD priests will point to Emperor Dean Ornish, who doesn't know how to do good science. Any good scientist controls one factor, not 5, in an RCT. So don't tell me the Ornish diet improved CVD markers until he does an RCT that only changes diet.
