1/2 Beware the Tory tax con

Boris Johnson says he's going to make tax cuts.

But he doesn't mean VAT - the tax that hits working people hardest.

Over the last nine years, they've nearly doubled the amount of VAT we pay.

And those on lower incomes pay the highest percentage.
2/2 The bottom 20% spend 9.7% of their income on VAT, while the top 20% spend 5.2%.

So the Tories haven't only cut services & benefits, they've also shifted taxation onto those who can least afford it.

When Johnson talks about tax cuts, he means for high earners & big business.
On average each household has seen its VAT bill increase by £2,000 plus a year under the Tories.

In 2009-10, the average household spent £2,592 on VAT.

By 2018-19, the average was £4,851.

How?

1/ The Tories hiked the rate from 17.5% to 20%.

2/ As prices rose, we paid more.
