Here's what we do know about the judicial nominees that McConnell is trying to fast track: 11 of the 19 refused to say that Brown v. Board was correctly decided. Call your Senators. 202-224-3121
Brantley Starr, is one of the judges McConnell is attempting to push through w/o full consideration. In addition to his refusal to affirm that Brown was correctly decided he has defended voter suppression laws & defiance by county clerks of the SCOTUS marriage equality decision.
It’s critical that you call yr Senator. Tell them that you do not want a package of 19 judges confirmed by “consent” for lifetime appts. Each judge should be evaluated, debated on, & subject to a roll call vote.Fight for your democracy. Whoever yr Sen is, call them 202-224-3121.

Yes. And the constant feigned naivete (“were the tweets racist? “Is racism at the heart of this or that?”) and absolute ignorance about the history of racism & racist public policies would not be permitted in any other field.
We had an entire week of writing & on air news stories about school desegregation and busing led by writers & commentators with virtually no expertise in the field - addressing one of the most transformative and convulsive efforts of 20th century America.
The lack of respect & seriousness accorded writing abt racism is why racist voter suppression practices - found by fed judges in Tx, NC, Wisc. - was not framed in 2016 as a danger to our democracy & a reflection of an ugly & explicit strain of white supremacy in state houses.

Yesterday’s centennial anniversary of the Chicago Race Riot compelled me to dig into 1919, @eveewing ‘s new book of poems abt this pogrom & the Great Migration refugees who settled in Chicago from the south in the early 1900s. It is superb.
I am so moved by this presentation of the interior lives of those who fled southern violence w/ dreams & hopes & found disappointment & northern oppression.There are devastating lines that have stayed in my head: “The lash lives in their shoulders.”
And this devatating jewel @eveewing: “hearts broken at their belief/that leaving the darkness/meant finding the sun.” Whew! The poem “sightseers” speaks directly into this moment - challenging those who Hannah Arendt cautions “never made up their minds to be good or evil.”

A Republican who, with the stroke of a pen, cancelled the Red Line, a rapid transit project that was potentially the greatest investment in Black communities in Baltimore.
The project imagined 10,000 construction jobs over years, an apprenticeship program at Edmondson HS for construction trades, small bus opportunities & most of all mobility for Black residents of the city to access jobs & education.
We filed a civil rights complaint with the Dept of Transportation naacpldf.org/press-release/… which (you guessed it) the Trump Admin’s DOT (Elaine Chao) closed w/o investigation.

Regardless of how you feel about abortion what is being and has been orchestrated, hinging largely on stealing a Supreme Court seat, is scary as hell and won’t stop at abortion. I would imagine any candidate looking for a Republican epiphany might need to get a grip.
And also, black women keep trying to save this country from itself but y’all won’t let them.
Just remember how many federal appointees refused to acknowledge that Brown v Board was rightly decided — something that would have been unheard of even under Reagan. Roe is settled case law. Brown is settled case law. Until it isn’t.

1. This is a perfect description of what Trump is up to. He's reopening questions many Americans (esp. younger ones) thought had been settled--is America a nation of immigrants? is birthright citizenship fair? is white nationalism so bad? is Islamophobia bad? is homophobia wrong?
2. The alacrity with which Lindsey Graham embraced the end of birthright citizenship today is very notable. It indicates just how rapidly and radically Trump has dragged the GOP to the right.

At today's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Sen. Blumenthal asked 9th Circuit nominee Ryan Nelson if Brown v. Board was correctly decided. Nelson says it was, "like all Supreme Court precedent." Blumenthal called that answer "intellectually dishonest"
Blumenthal asked if Nelson's response meant that he thought Plessy v. Ferguson was correctly decided when it was decided. Nelson replied that Brown reversed Plessy, and "some, many, most, everyone that I know would suggest that's a good thing"
Blumenthal presses, saying he's not asking if every case was correctly decided. Nelson replies that Brown was correctly decided, with no qualifier at the end. But then when Blumenthal asks if Roe was correctly decided, Nelson says it was, "like all Supreme Court precedent"
