But the logic of his behaviour - just like Theresa May's before - is pushing him relentlessly towards his resignation.
Johnson forced May out of her job to grab it for himself. And that's fair. I don't see he did anything wrong there. May couldn't get anything through parliament, and so she resigned. That's the nature of the job.
He made her resign when she couldn't win a vote in parliament. he will have to do the same.
This, by the way, exactly what Theresa May thought she could do.
And then resign.
But ridiculous or not, that is the logical outcome of his behaviour.
That is now his defining policy. And when it fails, he will have to resign.
So he'll have to put a referendum in it instead.
We are getting a general election, and the Tories will - if their survival instinct kicks in - have a second referendum.
