OK. So I'm working around the house listening to a podcast about Woodstock 99. Suddenly there's a brief mention of the fact that there was a Woodstock 94 (which...OF COURSE THERE WAS) and within minutes, I'm thinking of all the incredible albums that are now TWENTY FIVE YEARS OLD
Kids, gather round. Uncle Robert is going to tell you about one of the most formative years of many gen-Xers and older millennials' lives -- while I contemplate the fact that my time is a piece of wax, falling on a termite, that's choking on the splinters
First, I don't know what my favorite album of all time is, but Superunknown is definitely one of them (with the exception of nearly all the singles), and it literally gives me chills to think that prior to that year, the world had never heard this album
I'm having trouble moving past this, because even 25 years later, I just want to stop, crank this up and listen to it for the rest of the day.

Also, RIP Chris 💔
This won't be an all-grunge thread, but Alice in Chains' "I Stay Away" also came out that year, and it serves as a reminder that the 90s weirdly seemed to have a lot of dark stop-motion/claymation music videos
(See also, Tool's "Sober" video, which came out the year before)
(And Primus's Southbound Pachyderm)
(And Green Jelly's Three Little Pigs, which......what the hell was that?????)
Anyway, speaking of Woodstock 94, it's the one that didn't end in riots and fires (looking at you Woodstock 99). It was rain-soaked and covered in mud.

See, for example, muck-drenched Nine Inch Nails performing Closer (which came out that year)
And Green Day performing When I Come Around (from that year's Dookie) while getting pelted with mud (Billy Joe also puts the mud in his mouth multiple times)
Speaking of dookie, 94 also brought us "the brand new doo-doo" from the Beastie Boys
94 was the year we lost Kurt Cobain, but we got Nirvana Unplugged, which was played repeatedly when he died.

The band played their own songs, and a few covers, including Plateau by the Meat Puppets
94 was also a year that brought us some really delightfully weird music.

One was a band whose name was "Evil" spelled backwards, whose album cover was a Peter Howson painting
And to think that before 94, we hadn't learned that Tori Amos wasn't a Cornflake Girl
And then there's Jeff Buckley, who now brings our tally of people in this list who are no longer with us to four (Cornell, Yauch, Cobain, Buckley)
The Toadies also put out their only major record, Rubberneck, in 94, which you almost definitely know for the song Possum Kingdom, but the song Backsliders is great and you've probably never heard it
The Offspring was a brand new band, headed by a guy sporting some pretty fresh braids
Then there was a band named after a Willy Wonka character.

The video for their 1994 single is full of cats because it was filmed in an animal shelter 😺
