Where we are now: Someone like Beto O’Rourke calling the sitting president a racist would historically be a big political story. (Could you imagine Obama doing this to McCain or Romney?) But this is just how a lot of Democrats talk about Trump now.
FWIW the point I was trying to make isn’t being scoldy about norms or whatever, but just observing how a lot of typically cautious classes of people have come around to talking openly and frankly about Trump’s racism; it took a long time, but now it’s almost ever-present.
Anyway, this is just me, but I think this sort of thing matters because violent racism or ethnonationalism doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and it’s important to watch not just for enablers but for the marks of how strongly (or feebly) a society pushes back against it, denies it space.
