From same document: "Many of the most important mitigations require businesses and citizens to act. There have been hundreds of meetings at ministerial and official level to discuss preparedness with businesses and civil society groups." Hundreds of meetings, eh? Such clarity!
Bet you can already see the outline of the Mother of All Excuses, can't you? After Brexit, when we're squatting in caves by the light of burning sheep, the Government will be able to point to its 750 pieces of info and its hundreds of meetings and say "Why weren't you ready?"

And here's the euro chart. Similarly tricky, but you'll get it eventually, like one of those magic 3D photos...
Gallows humour of course. Boris Johnson has wiped 2.8% off the pound vs the dollar, and 3.5% off the pound vs the euro. That's quite a hefty chunk! And the pound has now settled at the new low for several weeks, so it's more than a blip. And with stockpiling/Christmas looming...

Scary piece about how a snap GE could take place on 1 November. It has a point - we always think of elections as happening on Thursdays, but there's no obligation. It's just habit. So the date could work. And I would guess that BJ would smash it.

1) By holding the GE after Brexit, one could say "what's the point of the Brexit Party?" and many voters may think the same.
2) It will burnish the Tories' hard Brexit credentials, since proroging Parliament during the election campaign (that *is* a rule) delivers a no deal.
3) It puts the other parties in a real bind. People who follow Brexit closely know it won't be over on Brexit Day, but the average voter - who's sick of the whole mess - may not be interested in a manifesto built around the "next stages" of Brexit.

Something non-Brexit related for once. I want to talk a little bit about TopCashback. I've had some great experiences with the site, so it seemed good to spread the word. Basically, you join and then shop as usual at over 4,000 retailers (going via the TopCashback site each time)
In return, you get a kickback from the retailer, either as a % of spend or as a flat £ amount. For instance, you might get 4-10% back on a hotel booking, a few % on online fashion retailers - or a hefty £50-£100+ bonus for changing utilities provider, broadband supplier etc.
The best bit about it is that the price you pay isn't affected i.e. if you're buying something that would cost £50 if you went directly to the ecommerce site, it will still cost £50 via the TopCashback link to that merchant.

Ein Thread zum Fall #Wächtersbach, weil mir im Berichten darüber (mal wieder) das weit verbreitete Unvermögen auffällt, rassistische Gewalt klar zu benennen. Typische Formulierungen, die seit gestern immer wieder auftauchen:
1. "fremdenfeindliches Motiv": ich kenne den Inhalt des Abschiedsbriefes nicht, den der Täter hinterlassen hat, mag sein, dass er Hass "auf Fremde" o.ä. formuliert hat. Er hat aber auf jemanden geschossen, den er nicht kannte, von dem er nicht wusste, ob er "fremd" im Land ist.
Konkreter: er hätte auch auf meinen Ehemann oder meine Kinder schießen können, wenn die gestern in Wächtersbach gewesen wären. Die sind Deutsch und Schwarz. Das Motiv heißt also Rassismus, nicht Fremdenfeindlichkeit.

Der @ORF verbreitet im Hauptabendprogramm nach einem Spielfilm ("Das Wunder von #Wörgl"), den über 600.000 Menschen sahen, in einer Erklär- und Begleitdoku, die haltlose These nach einer "Selbstausschaltung des Parlaments" im Jahr 1933.
Zur Erinnerung: Dollfuß ließ anordnen, dass am 15. März 1933 unter Androhung von Waffengewalt Nationalratsabgeordneten der Zutritt zum Parlament verwehrt wird. Das war das Ende der Ersten Republik in Österreich. Nicht eine kleine Geschäftsordnungskrise davor, die war nur Anlass.
Im Spielfilm selbst wurde auch bewusst der #Austrofaschismus übersprungen. Der Film endet mit der Verurteilung Unterguggenbergs und einer Einblendung, dass er ein Jahr danach starb. Auf einmal hängen schon Hakenkreuzfahnen in Wörgl.

Today I received an email from @DExEUgov one that reads like it comes from a parallel universe. A universe where negotiations are going well. One in which no deal is very unlikely, relationships are cordial and all is just lovely.
I'll post a THREAD. Judge for yourselves.
1/ Dept ex EU response to petition to remain if no deal can be agreed:

"Whilst striking a deal with our EU partners remains the outcome we expect, ‘no deal’ plans are well-developed and we stand ready to make a success of Brexit, whatever the outcome of our negotiations."
2/ We are leaving the EU. That’s what the British public voted for and that is what we will deliver.

Negotiations are progressing well and we are confident of a deal this autumn.

Walmart, Kaiser hospital, offices nearby. San Fran general hospital report receiving multiple patients. YouTube building >110k sq ft, 800 workers.
(2) FOX updates earlier info to say the building is >220k square feet, 1.700 workers.
