The NYT fired its public editor in 2017 and is heading into 2020 with less accountability than it had in 2016. It’s becoming what it abhors, a big institution with no accountability. I’ll keep supporting journalism elsewhere but am canceling my subscription until that changes.
Mistakes and differences of opinion happen and I’ve urged people to keep subscribing through past controversies. But you can’t keep blowing coverage, fire your public editor, introduce no new accountability measures and still expect readers to trust you. You just can’t.
Entirely possible. The inability to separate good faith criticism from bad is part of the problem and exacerbates the insularity. “Re-hire a public editor” is not Trumpism but many will tell themselves it is and dismiss it on that basis. It’s all very sad.
Proving my point. NYT front pages are part of history. It wasn’t corrected before making it into print. How did the mistake get made? Who was in the room? How does staff feel? Qs a public editor could ask but the job was axed. Instead readers get glibness.
