I resisted for a long time but I’m cancelling my NYT subscription today. Great reporters but terrible editorial judgment on headlines and social media, which is all most people read. It can’t be the paper of record anymore if it doesn’t accurately report the news.
It doesn't matter that the underlying journalism is often very good. Headlines matter more than ever - that's the reality of the industry. Refusing to take that seriously is a sign of a failing institution that is not up to the challenge. I'll spend my money on other outlets.
Nope. Positioning Trump as assailing hate rather than stoking it profoundly mischaracterizes what's happening in America especially over the past few days. The stubborn resistance to recognizing that Trump stokes hate *on purpose* is a fundamental failure.
The NYT fired its public editor after blowing major coverage decisions in 2016. It lacks diversity at crucial levels when racial resentment is a dominant force in US politics. It asks for trust but stonewalls about internal accountability. Do better, NYT. nytimes.com/2016/12/17/pub…
This. The failures are institutional. Willful blindness at senior levels. Insularity. It has to be self-critical and candid to be the vital institution we need so badly right now. Until it does I’m spending my money elsewhere.
The NYT wants to be considered as a something akin to a public service. But that goes both ways. Their decisions affect the public and right now there there is no accountability, especially since they eliminated the public editor job in 2017.
The NYT’s decision to eliminate the public editor position in 2017 while offering no accounting of its 2016 coverage was a decision to thumb its nose at its readership and convey contempt for the idea that it should be held accountable just as it holds others accountable.
With the public editor gone there’s no mechanism for investigating decisions like those leading to today’s front page. Did the NYT’s lack of diversity play a role? Does that lack affect its coverage of racism generally & sanctification of “economic anxiety”? Readers should know.
At an institution as big and important as the NYT you can’t have trust without accountability. The NYT has thumbed its nose at accountability, so it is losing trust.
With all due respect Jason the NYT doesn’t have a monopoly on news. Other organizations are doing great reporting and need my money more. As long as the NYT keeps thumbing its nose at accountability I’ll spend my subscription dollars elsewhere.
