Took a look at some early team trends especially for those with new managers. First up West Brom and Slaven Bilic...
Clip 1
Slow possession between CBs drawing the press from 1st line of opposition. Width is key though with full backs esp Gibbs wide and wingers high and wide causing gaps to open in half spaces. Positional rotation while possession is built allows wide MF to drop into half-space
Clip 2
Again slow possession in defence not afraid to use GK as the distributor. Slow pace draws opposition 1st line press. Full backs stay high and wide as out ball (nominally Gibbs). Once press is on GK plays long diaganol and FB drives into open space.
Once in final 3rd full back joins forwards and 1 MF (normally opposite winger) to attack penalty box. CMs support winger in possession.
Clip 3
Again use of Gk as distributor. Slow build up around backline to draw press. Once initated GK finds out ball which is Gibbs high and wide. Gibbs drives forwards but as soon as winger has FB isolated 1v1 pass is always played and box is attacked.
WBA tried to play out with varying degrees of success/not success last season. Some looked uncomfortable whilst on other occasions there didn't seem to be a plan of how to do this tactic efficiently to advance to final 3rd.
Clear plan, positional rotation, triggers and ideas of when to initate were present from WBA and Bilic. They advanced to final 3rd efficiently, allowing wingers to attack their FBs. Key will be how good quality of final 3rd play is with this tactic to create high quality chances.
One thing lacking for WBA in this game was clear plan of how to create for their forward. That is something to monitor movign forwards esp against low block sides. Nottingham Forest were only to happy to press and allow this tactic to work
