They obviously don’t cause mass shootings but if movies and video games didn’t have any influence on people’s behavior the Defense Department wouldn’t be pumping money into both industries to influence the content.
And if you weren’t aware that happened I encourage you to look into it because it’s way more fucked up and widespread than I’m making it sound here.
Feel free to post links to sources, I’m at work and can’t do that right now but it’s been well-documented by even mainstream press.
It’s just weird how the response of so many leftists is to claim that spending years of your life playing a game that lets you pretend to be a US troop committing realistically depicted war crimes for hours and hours every day can’t possibly have an impact on a person’s mind.

More and more people are going to be looking at the state of the world and questioning everything they thought they knew about it. As communists we need to be willing and able to provide them with the answers. If we aren’t, someone else will be.
As @catdadaeternal puts it, people become “activatable” (ideologically receptive) or not due to material conditions. But as we head closer to the collapse of capitalism, more people than ever are going to have their worlds turned upside down. We need to be ready to catch them.

This white supremacist violence is only going to exponentially escalate if we do nothing. This is not a fad; this is a war.
I genuinely think people don’t realize the degree and frequency with which these hate crimes are occurring now. They’re pretty rarely picked up by national press.

People with mental illnesses are not necessarily or even usually less rational than people without them. The only reason people think that is the false notion that a “normal” person is totally rational and that irrationality therefore is *only* present because of mental illness.
Depressed people, for instance, actually give more accurate self-evaluations than the general public. I’ll try to find that study later when I get the chance.
Everybody has “irrational” thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. That’s what being human is. If you think any eccentric, abnormal, or exceptional behavior must be due to mental illness, it’s because you don’t really understand what humans are or how the mind works.

For those taking notes:

Video Games do not cause mass-shootings.
Porn does not cause sexual violence.
Social Media does not cause depression.
Rap Music does not cause one to join a gang.
KISS and Black Sabbath did not cause Satanism.
Comic books did not cause illiteracy.
If your entire shtick on media/technology is to blame it for things you don't like, then you are revealing more about your critical thinking skills than you are about the state of the world.
Of course every new technological advancement has the potential to be used in problematic ways, but potential for problematic use is not equivalent to evidence of harm in general.

I'm so tired of the bullshit narrative that violent video games cause mass shootings. There have been dozens of studies on this point and NONE support that conclusion.

To all the spineless politicians using video games as a scapegoat: try doing your job instead.

In the wake of every mass shooting, politicians - particularly in the US - rush for something to blame. Far too often, video games are the thing they point to. They'll reference "studies" to support their claims, but they haven't read them and don't know what they say.
This refrain is easy because no one actually holds them accountable. The interviewers don't know the research either, and even if they did they're not going to push back because they like the narrative...

There are MANY, MANY studies linking increased access to guns to gun violence.

@GOPLeader, you are a lying coward.
It doesn't even make logical sense. Video games are also hugely popular in countless other countries but they don't have mass shootings like we do. Unless video games only exist in the US, Iraq, and Afghanistan, then the logical conclusion isn't video games. It's GUNS.

So if we can't fix something 100% we shouldnt try? Better dissolve ICE and tear down all border walls then.

The idea isn't that better laws will make it impossible. The idea is to make it way, way harder.
