1 There were neo-Nazis there and counterprotesters to them there
2 Trump said there were “very fine people” “on both sides”
Failing to mention the sides Trump meant leads the listener to assume he meant the sides mentioned.
Now suppose I report “Gray went to Tom and Linda’s house today while Tom was out, and Gary and Linda had sex.”
It’s a true statement. I just leave out “years ago”.
“You might be surprised at Shaun’s real opinion of the EDL. He’s a card-carrying member.”
Someone MIGHT be surprised at your real opinion of the EDL. And I’m sure you are a card-carrying member of some group, any will do.
But by not supplying the referent group, the natural implication I give is you are card-carrying member of the EDL, which I doubt.
You know that Trump wasn’t morally comparing the evil El Paso shooter to “Americans who oppose racism.” He was comparing him to the evil Leftist Dayton shooter.
Or is that okay? Of the two mass shootings that awful day, only one was bad?
