I admit I was pleased to see Carlsen's early h4 in a nice win against Dominguez. With h5 & Qg4 and not developing his pieces, moves only a beginner or a world champion would make!
MVL-Rapport had a Frenchman playing against the French Defense, in the style of Labourdonnais in a city named for a French king! A fun game that's a good example of the excitement of rapid chess. #STLRapidBlitz
Karjakin-Yu in r3 gave a strange impression. White with an extra exchange moves a strong knight from e5 to f4. Yu was soon winning, but blew it up and had to take the draw. Of course, much easier to criticize from afar than to play!
Aronian won a good endgame vs MVL and leads with 3/3. Some good fortune too, but that's what it takes in rapid and blitz. Hoping for more exciting chess tomorrow. Follow @STLChessClub @GrandChessTour.
Yes, MVL had his chances vs Aronian earlier, probably even winning. That's part of the good fortune I referred to, but one cannot feel guilty about an opponent's mistakes!

I'm a proponent of online play & Chess 960 ("Fischerandom"), but if important events like world championship qualifiers are online, security must eliminate the potential for cheating.
I'm preparing for my own Chess 960 match in St. Louis in a few days, so I was watching some matches in the FIDE online qualifier. An unknown guy beating two strong GMs & taking Grischuk to armageddon is curious at best, but then you look at the games and it's a joke.
I see this bs all the time playing blitz online. And while I don't expect organizers or arbiters to be able to detect machine play as easily as top GMs can, they must eliminate the possibility with proctors on-site in important events.

Macron and a "call for peace" in Ukraine, Maas and his "diverse business relations" with Moscow--all in the face of open aggression against Europe by Putin. It's either corruption or kompromat in such cases.
The only leader with a Russian name that European leaders will talk tough to is Boris Johnson.

Putin's Russia was kicked out of the G7 for good cause--invading Ukraine--and long after it should have happened for turning Russia into a dictatorship. Putin is still invading Ukraine and is no less a dictator today.
Abandoning principles & the rule of law in the face of impunity is absurd appeasement. If a murderer goes to jail and shows no remorse, do you say he should be released because jail doesn't work?
The fallacy of free world engagement with dictatorships is one reason Putin stayed in power for 20 years, and also why he feels confident in attacking Europe & the US. Why not?
