Why are Guyana and Jamaica so v poor among all Caribbean islands?

And why is Trinidad so rich?

Excluding Haiti/Cuba as they're outliers with exceptional histories

Interesting how countries with similar geographic situation and racial make-up can have vastly different outcomes
Of course I am using the word "poor" in a relative sense

Both Guyana and Jamaica have higher PCIs compared to say India which is still at $7200 or thereabouts
It's interesting that Barbados was much richer than Trinidad 30 years ago!

There is much nonsense spoken about medieval Europe -

Apparently steeped in religious fundamentalism, and a belief in flat earth among other things

But nothing could be further away from truth

Belief in sphericity never dwindled
The false caricature that we hear about stems from a climate of anti-clericism and rabid atheism of 19th century, when it was fashionable to show religion (particularly Catholic Europe) in poor light

Till 1800, Americans cast two votes in Presidential elections!

Candidate with majority of electoral votes became President, and the runners-up VP

In 1800, we had P and VP from opposing parties!
President:John Adams (Federalist party)
VP - Jefferson (from the Republican Party)
I actually like this idea of each voter voting for two candidates

With this system, we might have had Donald Trump as President and Hilary Clinton as Vice President!
Correction to the above tweet -

It was actually in 1796 that John Adams won the Presidency and Jefferson was runners-up and hence VP

What I like about the Kashmir valley (from whatever little I have seen on media) is its fairly flat terrain!

Despite much of the valley being at altitudes of 5000+ feet!

The flat terrain explains the high population density relative to Jammu region
So though Jammu division on an average is at a much lower altitude, its density is barely 200 per sq.km, compared to the Kashmir valley which is at 430+ per sq.km

In part because much of Jammu is very hilly (Pir Pinjal ranges)
Another example is South interior Karnataka - very flat terrain for the most part, though most of South interior Karnataka is at altitudes way above 2000 ft

Bangalore for e.g. is 3000 ft above sea level. Though its terrain won't give you that impression

#Haiti's brutal military was disbanded in 1995 over the objections of the CIA, Pentagon & key Clinton advisers. Aristide first ordered reduction of the force from 7,000 to 1,500 followed by retiring all military commanders. Eventually only the marching band would remain.
This was considered a betrayal by the CIA who had tolerated the Haitian military high command turning Haiti into a major transhipment point for cocaine bound for the US. It was considered a "necessary evil" to allow a partnership to develop between the the Cali Cartel & #Haiti's
military if it helped to rid Colombia of Pablo Escobar and the rival Medellin Cartel. The hierarchy was Col. Michel "Sweet Micky" Francois [muscle], Gen. Biamby [shipping], & Gen. Cedras [frontman].
