The responses to this tweet are fascinating--so many paths one could follow from the music of "the sixties" to the politics of today. Here's my (mostly just joshing) hot take on where the politics of the 4 Beatles led...
Paul = Biden. Or Bill Weld. Or maybe Cory Booker.
George = Marianne Williamson. Definitely Marianne Williamson.
John = 40% Bernie Sanders. 40% Donald Trump. 20% Marianne Williamson (but only when he was high.)
Ringo = No one can tell really...but secretly he's rooting for Warren.
Full disclosure. I was a big Paul fan until I hit my jaded teenage years. Then I turned on Paul and became a huge John fan. In my 30s I discovered the genius of George. And in recent years I've come to appreciate that Ringo was a mighty fine drummer.
And I'm also not ashamed to say that the Beatles were such an obsession of mine as a little kid that this scene from the film Yesterday made me cry in a public theater.
What is it like to hear a perfect song for the first time? This film captured that moment brilliantly I thought. It's an impossible thing in real life, to hear a song you love for the first time again. But that film just about got me to that place.
I remember hearing "Smells like Teen Spirit" for the first time. I remember who played it for me and where I was. I also remember the first time someone played De La Soul's "Magic Number" for me.
Might as well tell the story of the only time I met a Beatle in real life. It was 1990. Ringo's stepdaughter was in my graduating class. I was very drunk at our Campus Dance on the main green. I wheeled around and almost knocked Ringo over. I mumbled "sorry," then slunk away.
