#JollofMusic101 Dear Upcoming Artiste: Basic Music Industry Terms you Should Know

3) Indie Labels:
These are self-funded labels that is NOT affiliated to any Big Three Record Label. Affiliation in this regard could be seen in the case of Mr Eazi’s Banku Music label liaising...
Universal Music Group Nigeria & South Africa. After his affiliation with Wizkid’s StarBoy Records in 2016.

Indie Labels often operate solo and an example of one would be #RicHassani’s label called Riverland Records.

4) Manager:
A manager is an integral determinant in the making or marring of an artiste’s career. The manager guides and oversees the daily dealings of an artist.
The manager could double as an advisor/counsellor to the artiste pertaining professional matters, plans or decisions and their effect on the artiste’s career.
The manager helps to seek opportunities to elevate the artiste.
Managers are often unsung heroes in the growth and success of Artistes. They facilitate the artist to excel artistically, in some cases even streamlining their personal lives.

5) PR:
Y’all must’ve heard of PR Stunt but prolly do not have ample knowledge on what it entails.

#Music #Afrobeats #Afro #AfroPop #AfroBeat #Nigeria #Africa
However, in this regard, it could mean “Press Relations” but traditionally means “Public Relations” or “Publicity”simply put.

It’s when the artiste (via team work) tries to get the public’s undivided attention, in a bid to embrace and buy his material;

#JollofMusic101
...it could be a single, an EP or album or instances where the label pulls strings for it’s artist to be recognized by a wider audience.

A typical example is usually a giveaway to people making dance videos to a song by the artist.
#Artistes #Producers #Musicians
For established acts, making moves that’d attract the public to their materials. An instance of an established artists using effective PR would be the Davido-Chioma Porsche story for the song #Assurance or the Wizkid-Tiwa Savage alleged romance enacted in the visuals for #Fever..
...and again, they would apply same tactic in pushing their forthcoming EP (you read right and read it here first).

Artistes sometimes fake-diss even and the public buy it!

Publicity is aimed at getting the public’s attention drawn to a brand, artist or material. Be swayed not
However, every artiste should have a #Publicist. According to #Wikipedia, A publicist is a person whose job is to generate and manage publicity for a company, brand or public figure -especially a celebrity or for a work such as a book, film or album.
Publicists are public relations specialists who have the role to maintain and represent the images of individuals, rather than representing an entire corporation or business.

Publicists are hired by public figures who want to maintain or protect their image.
Publicists brand their clients by getting magazine, TV, newspaper and website coverage. Vanessa Amadi is a PR guru and CEO of VA-PR. She has worked as publicist with Genevieve Nnaji, #DBanj, Neyo.

She is presently Davido & Tiwa Savage’s publicist and you can tell she’s...
doing an amazing job with these two artistes waving the flag globally.

Davido took home #BET International Act 2018. Tiwa Savage took home Best African Act at MTV Europe Music Awards 2018. Their appearances in the international media is courtesy of Vanessa's efficiency.
Mind you, in these international awards, Vanessa’s clients (Davido & Tiwa Savage) were the only acts representing nigeria in the nominee list.
. So next time, before you chastise Tiwa for making it to Wizkid’s video and what’s not, there are a bunch of informed heads who understand this music thing better than you think you do.

More by evening...!

6) Promo Copy:
Promotional copy is different from a demo because it must be a finished song.

An instance here is a promo copy of Tiwa Savage as a rising act
It’s usually not sold but distributed to the public, media, DJs for awareness.

Some promotional copy has just one song and some has more than one. A promotional copy must be completed with an art work before release. This is most common among rising artistes.

7) Promoter:

Promoter:
Promoters are one of the best people to help push you out there. They organize and generate Buzz for events/concerts and if you get lucky, you may be an opening act in an A-lister’s concert...
or an event where A-listers are billed to perform. That’s a raise in portfolio and eases visibility.

8) Royalty:
Royalties are the payment an artist gets upon the use or purchase of their materials. For Every time your material is used for commercial purpose by an establishment, you’re entitled to some payment and can sue if they don’t comply.
#Music
...Subsequent digital streams or purchases all earns the artist some royalty.
Ideally, artistes should be contacted before their materials are used for whatever commercial purpose by an establishment.

9) Publishing Deal:
I’m sure a lot of y’all come across this but do not really get it and that’s my job here… to help you through it.
In the music industry, a publisher is responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers receive due payment when their material is commercially used or recreated.

So a publishing deal is usually between a songwriter/producer and a publishing company.
The company monitors where it’s clients’ materials are used; proceed to collect royalties for the material being used and extend the agreed revenue percentage to the composer/songwriter(s).

#JollofMusic101
Some publishers actually go as far as placing the records in a revenue-generating position, say for advertisements.

Also Yemi Alade’s #Johnny Davido’s #Skelewu and Wizkid’s #DaddyYo have been used as soundtracks for movie series abroad, that certainly...
#JollofMusic101
...earns them some revenue for the song being used for a commercial purpose.
So dearies, your work can fetch you multiple streams of income even when it’s no longer buzzing.

Again, stay woke!

10) A/R:
This stands for “Artists & Repertoire”. It’s a division of the record label that is responsible for scouting talents.
They also help with the artistic and commercial development of an artist among other things. I’d single this as a topic in coming weeks.
A&Rs are one of the key people to look out for as an artiste because they also serve as an intermediary between Artistes and a record label.
If you’re looking out to be signed to a record label, reach out to A&Rs, build a relationship with them and pitch your best materials.
I’ll be interviewing a couple and they’ll be dishing tips on what they look out for in artistes.

#JollofMusic101
You sure do not want to close The Jollof Diary for a second before you miss out on these things. Every upcoming artiste or music enthusiast should know the relevance of these jobs in the career of an artiste.

11) Deluxe:
Sometimes we see an artist announce a “Deluxe edition” after already releasing a project, particularly an album.
Some do not really understand what “Deluxe” actually entails but we just scream “Yassss”. Don’t worry, the past is in the past.

Actually, Deluxe could be anything the record label want you to believe it is.

.
Mention an upcoming artiste!!
It often comes with added value which can be Bonus Tracks, exclusive footage of the artiste’s live performance or live recording of the album. It must possesses an extra material to make people buy it even if they already bought the initial copy.
#JollofMusic101
Typical example is Tiwa Savage’s RED album released in December with 16 tracks. Then the deluxe edition that came with 2 bonus tracks featuring Wizkid and P-square.

Another example is Yemi Alade’s Mama Africa album released in March 2016 with 15 tracks (image above)...
Another example is Yemi Alade’s Mama Africa album released in March 2016 with 15 tracks (image above) then the deluxe that was released in April with extra 6 tracks featuring featuring AKA, Bucie and other solo records.

#JollofMusic101
(The first two pictures are artworks of Yemi Alade's sophomore album, then the last two are copies of Deluxe version of the album. You dig?) This is however not mandatory.
