Part of agenda for New York Times 1619 Project: Delegitimize present-day GOP by identifying it with slavery. Quote: 'Today's obstructionists are using a playbook developed long ago by the plantation elite.' (Article makes clear 'today's obstructionists' are Republicans.) 1/5
In effort to tie GOP to John Calhoun, 1619 Project ignores modern-day Democratic obstruction. Anybody remember Democratic judicial filibusters of GWBush years? Harry Reid? And if subject is nullification, sanctuary jurisdictions? Obstruction is a two-way street. 2/5
Plus: If issue is obstructing majorities, why stop at plantation elite in search for antecedents? Why not go farther back? Rome? Obstruction is a feature of human beings and politics. But NYT 1619 Project seeks to tie GOP to slavery. Political advantages are obvious. 3/5
Astonishingly, NYT 1619 Project cites Wisconsin GOP legislators as obstructionist in 2018, when just 7 years earlier, Wisconsin Democrats *fled the state* to obstruct GOP governor, legislative majority. Obstruction is a two-way street. 4/5 nytimes.com/interactive/20…
But not in The 1619 Project. Of course, NYT can write what it wants. But this isn't history. It's an elaborately-produced op-ed. 5/5 End. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
