Isn't this Trump-Pelosi stuff just impeachment theater? Goading each other, playing to their crowds. Democrats want to see Pelosi stand up to Trump, Republicans want to see Trump stand up to Pelosi. So they do. 1/6
On other hand, some serious forces may be moving toward impeachment. Democrats are pushing 'cover-up' allegation. If they get base stirred up enough, might have to go forward. Possibly headed toward court with Trump executive privilege claim. 2/6
So: US v Nixon. In 1974, indictment of Watergate conspirators. Prosecutor told Nixon: Hand over WH tapes. Nixon claimed privilege. SCOTUS ruled privilege 'must yield to the demonstrated, specific need for evidence in a pending criminal trial.' 3/6
Today's US v Nixon lesson: You gotta show there is a big, serious need to outweigh a privilege claim. Would Adam Schiff's 29th subpoena satisfy that big, serious need? Maybe not. On other hand, a historic impeachment inquiry certainly would. 4/6
So could be that to press forward House Dems will need an impeachment inquiry to show courts this is a big, big deal. 5/6
Finally, the essential insanity of the whole thing. Democrats scream 'Cover-up!' But there has already been a criminal inquiry, the Mueller investigation, and Trump handed over evidence to the special prosecutor. Some cover-up. 6/6 End.
