Today is Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. One of its themes is that the Holocaust was perpetrated by Germany, arguably the "most civilized" country in the world by the standards of its time (1/12)
This year, with the publication of clearly antisemitic cartoons by the New York Times, I feel very viscerally how the Holocaust can happen. The cartoons are not the problem. On the contrary, the cartoons *reveal* the problem (2/12)
The problem is hatred of Jews at every level of the New York Times. Things that cannot be said about any other people can be said freely and openly about Jews. It's OK to accuse Jews of the worst crimes in the modern lexicon, based on lies, or no evidence at all (3/12)
The one Jewish state in the world is also the only state that can be called illegitimate in polite company, such as the pages of the New York Times. It's OK to accuse Jews of genocide, of imperialism, of colonialism, based on lies, or on no evidence at all (4/12)
The New York Times would rather spend day after day reporting on the invented crimes of Israel rather than the real crimes of Israel's enemies, other countries in the region, or in the world (5/12)
The New York Times has no sympathy for the real problems that Israelis face in the Middle East, and gives no credit to Israel for its attempts to deal with its problems in the most humane way possible (6/12)
No country in human history has ever gone to the extremes that Israel has gone to, to protect the lives of its enemies during wartime. That is a fact. It should be lauded and investigated by every news organization, by every human rights organization, by the New York Times (7/12)
And there is a real genocide going on in the Middle East, actually *many* genocides, against every minority in the region. The one place in the region where minorities are thriving is Israel. Yet the New York Times would rather focus on Israel - but not the real Israel (8/12)
Israel is the most accessible country in the Middle East, the country with the most foreign news reporters, yet the pages of the New York Times are filled with ignorance about it, and hate (9/12)
It is not the ignorance that causes the hate, it is hatred makes the New York Times ignorant. The New York Times sends people to Israel to find ways to hate it, and when they don't find things, they make things up (10/12)
An entire industry has grown up in Israel and around the world, of making up reasons to hate Israel. Hating Israel is a permissible way to hate Jews. The antisemitic cartoon in the New York Times reveals the truth: hatred of Israel is a ruse, and everybody knows it (11/12)
Hatred of Israel is just another way to hate Jews. This is how the Holocaust begins. It begins when it is ordinary and acceptable to tell lies about Jews. The Holocaust begins with the New York Times (12/12)
