Words vary as per region. Even word Janeu is modern. In Vedas, it was Upavita or Parivita. Source is Vedas. Even for Mangalsutra.
With time even Yajna reduces to dhoop-batti, mantra reduces to 19th century "Om Jai Jagdeesh"
But essence is obvious. 1/n
Its a myth that Janeu is always worn from left shoulder to right waist. Its a contemporary practice in many places. But even some post-Vedic smriti texts suggest wearing thread as mala around neck during work, over left shoulder during Sandhya, during right during Swadhyaya. 2/n
Innumerable kanya gurukuls across Bharat have girls wearing Janeu for at least 100 y. I prefer my engineering Duck Test - if it looks like Janeu, made of material of Janeu, is sacred as Janeu, then probably it is Janeu. 3/n
