Personally, I’m torn between worrying what the long-term damage may be, & awe at the sheer vigour of our democracy, which can play for such enormous stakes, straining every sinew, searching for every advantage, yet always staying within the letter, (if not the spirit) of the law.

Those who speak of the death of British democracy seem to me to have it exactly wrong. Everything that is happening is happening because we, as a country, are testing existential issues that many other countries have opted to suppress in a way so democratic as to be titanic.

It’s basically the constitutional equivalent of the recent Headingley Test. And as with that, we won’t now who’s won until the last ball has been bowled.

Rather than despair at the polarisation, I am going to look on the bright side, and admire the degree to which we have the most politically engaged electorate in Europe.
