Wife and I are laughing tonight about one of our silliest fights from a week ago - when we review our past fights together, it seems like every fight begins with someone sending the other a fight proposal/request, and the other person accepting it 😂
fights are almost never about the thing that you’re fighting over
you shouldn’t have to argue about *how* you’re fighting, *while* you’re fighting

trying to do both at once is a quick way to compound your frustration with each other and make things worse for everybody

the smart thing to do is to schedule relationship maintenance in advance

My ex-boss, when prompted to write anything he liked, wrote an internal blogpost that was basically “life is about enduring failure after failure without letting it destroy you.” I thought it was bleak then, but as the years pass, I realize that it’s deeply life-affirming
How is that affirming? It’s about deciding to get up and go again, knowing it’s going to hurt. Lots of people “deal” with the problem of failure by by adopting an overdefensive posture. It’s radical to just accept that life will kick your ass, and dare to live passionately anyway
It’s interesting to juxtapose this with the thin yet loud veneer of positivity you get with some people who exclaim optimism and then quit as soon as the going gets tough. Not to pass judgement, but just to appreciate the variance

Just spent a couple of hours sitting in on Singapore’s Parliament, which is a thing you can do if you’re a citizen. Quite an interesting experience and I’m glad I finally got around to doing it
The 1st funny thought I had was “wow this meeting could’ve been an email” 😂 which is a bit of a childish thought, I know. But it does seem broadly inefficient somehow, so many people sitting in a room for hours talking turns to talk. Need to read+think more to have a better POV
The 2nd funny thing is the decorum and ritual. Everybody - from members of the public to the Prime Minister - is expected to bow to the Speaker when entering and exiting Parliament. I appreciate the effect it has, but it’s also funny to me. Ministers gotta bow before they can pee

We begin this thread with a story... the story of how twatter throttles voices they don't like. As many are aware, this account has been heavily throttle for more than a year now. And no, the truth is, the numbers just don't add up.
If you will recall, I was able to figure out the person behind the algorithms was one named Nick Pickles, twatter COO. He was called into a hearing in March of '18 over in the UK over "hate speech" where he said they were developing an algorithm to fight against the issue.

no, you don't understand, we cannot take me ANYWHERE, anyone who's been with me in person will testify. Like a week ago I'm out for drinks with journos and we're smoking and I hear someone pass by using a word I perk up at

So obviously I abruptly wander away from the group
I come back a few minutes later and all these men are asking "are you okay" which was nice, but my male work partner is telling them "that's just Linda, she gets into shit" because yup, I can be just standing outside and a story will unfold in front of me.
(anyway the people that I followed definitely worked for the company I thought they did and should also be a bit more fucking well discreet when discussing trade business on public streets)

I don’t normally tweet about projects I work on, but when it involves a Committee of Adjustment denying a variance to maintain an entirely existing (not legal) triplex containing 3 units of affordable housing bc the new owner wanted the fire department to make sure it was safe...
I might have to approve a variance to my policy. But need some time so I’m not angry tweeting.
