No Deal isn't popular. Parties don't go into elections with their principle policy being unpopular.

If we have an election, we can guess Cummings et al are confident they can agree something with EU. That means Labour basing campaign on stopping no deal a risk.
Imagine: An election is penned for 24th October, Labour tour the country arguing against no deal, then on 17th October Johnson comes back with something from the EU summit. Perhaps this, suggested by @TomKibasi last July.
So whilst Labour *should* warn of the dangers of no deal, its not all they should do. The way they insulate themselves from any outcome is to back a 2nd ref, then say they'll campaign for remain. They should state May's deal will be 2nd option on the ballot paper.
Putting May's deal on the ballot is awkward. Labour argued better brexits were available, and they were right. But no-one wants this to go on longer, there's no time to negotiate a Labour brexit. If WA passes the sky won't fall in. The referendum should be legally binding.
That's the only way Labour can have a clear stance, which respects leave voters, whilst not trying to seek to please everyone. If people want a harder brexit than WA allows they can vote for someone else. If people want brexit-at-all costs, they will have to too.
A lowest common denominator anti-No deal campaign is tempting. It keeps the most people onside. But Johnson only has to make one move to make it irrelevant, potentially a week before a GE. It's time to pick a side.
