🚨 Boris Johnson calls for a GE under the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

Of course he needs 2/3 of all MPs to back him...

If they have any sense whatsoever they should leave him high and dry, in office but not in power.
Yes, Corbyn just bounced straight back saying BJ has to take no deal off the table first.
Ian Blackford goes with a similar angle. GE? Sure. But get rid of no deal first.
Now Jo Swinson too. He is dangling in the breeze.

The most disgraceful line of reasoning the last few days (there have been many contenders!) is the statement that each month we stay in the EU "wastes £1 billion which could be spent on XYZ instead".

That implies a value of £0 placed on everything that EU membership offers us.
And it's not just one guilty party. Tons of Tories adopted almost exactly the same line in the debates over the last couple of days. Accusing the rebel alliance of forcing the UK to waste £1 billion every month, money that could be spent on better things instead.
Since that's the net figure after rebate etc. (actually it's *more* than we pay, but maybe they rounded up to get a nice easy monthly figure) it really does mean they see our EU membership as completely worthless.

Netflix just increased their price: "Your monthly price is increasing to £8.99 on Saturday, 5th October 2019. Why? We’re hard at work improving Netflix so that you can have even more great TV programmes and films to enjoy." Poor justification attempt for 12.5% price rise.
BTW, they have over 10 million UK subscribers, so that's £120 million more a year that UK households will be paying. It's not a tax, of course - people subscribe voluntarily - but it is a rise in their cost of living.
NOTE: I personally feel it's reasonable value at the higher price too. This is more about how something that looks small (£1 a month) can be large both in percentage terms, and in total amount. Now think how many other things always seem to go up by £1-2 a month, e.g. internet.

Government defeated 328-301.
PM loses his first Commons vote, and indeed is yet to win one.

Rebels get control of Commons tomorrow.
PM confirms tonight tabling a motion for election under the Fixed Term Parliament Act - suggests it should happen if the Bill is passed tomorrow. With a majority of 27 on this they should pass the Bill.
Corbyn says there can be an election when the Bill stopping No Deal is passed
this guy available for political consultancy...?

This is an important point, which the debate on what Johnson would have to do after a vote of no confidence under the Fixed Term Parliament Act hasn’t picked up.
The key point to hold onto is that the effect of s.2(3) and (4) FTPA (legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2011/14/…) is that the only confidence motion *that starts the ball rolling for a general election* is one worded in accordance with s.2(4): “That this House has no confidence in HM Government”.
But, critically, there is no prohibition on no confidence motions worded differently: they just don’t trigger a general election.

Whilst reporting that some pro Brexit campaigners in yellow jackets were shouting misogynist stuff at Kay and that I was “not British” and “a rapist” ... well done all who helped create this situation. Good job.

Will Labour pull or delay its no-confidence vote to avoid having to back a second referendum when it loses?
A no confidence vote could squeak through first time with the support of the DUP, to fire a shot across Tory bows. But under the Fixed Term Parliament Act 2011 you'd need two no confidence votes and it's hard to see the DUP letting in someone who wants a united Ireland.
If that's right, and Labour puts and loses a no confidence vote, what is then its Brexit policy? Unless you are really lead-foil delusional you know how Jeremy (or his office) feels about the EU. Imo it's every bit as likely that the Tories back a second referendum first.

Help me out here. Parliament clearly doesn't want a cliff-edge Brexit, but Brussels may make that the only choice, other than a very soft Brexit (which the EU thinks is the only solution to the Irish border issue). 1/9
But what happens if parliament votes to yield to the EU, and soften Brexit; and then refuses to boot the government out in a confidence motion? Every outcome seems implausible. 2/9
First and easiest solution: Theresa May stays on and negotiates Brexit on parliament's terms. But it seems really difficult for that to happen. It would be like David Cameron staying on to deliver Brexit in 2016. 3/9
