If you could get in a time machine and ask young fighting people in WWII, “Would you rather be shot at by Nazis or sitting in a classroom not being shot at by Nazis?”, you’d find that yesterday’s kids have the same preferences as today’s kids.

One explanation is that pundits understand that a good half or more of GOP voters do it to “stick it the the libs” more than out of authentic support for GOP policies.
The other is most GOP voters are white men and their wives. Democrats represent well, everyone else. And everyone else is considered less important than those white men.

@helaineolen I’ll add that people frequently misread “Election”, because their own sexism blinds them to the way it satirize their own sexism. The story is a “Lolita”-style unreliable narrator type story. If you zoom out a bit, you realize Tracy’s the hero and her teacher the villain.
Tracy is a smart girl whose uptightness and anxiety is a direct result of every single male person in her life being threatened by her and trying to sabotage her. Teacher #1 basically rapes her. Teacher #2 literally steals her work from her.
