MPP forces asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases are processed, staying in cities like Matamoros in Tamaulipas state, where poor infrastructure, & high levels of violence—including kidnapping, extortion, armed robbery & sexual violence—are putting their lives at risk
Tamaulipas state is designated by the US State Department with a level four “do not travel” warning due to extreme dangers of crime and kidnapping.

The US State Dept's own reports reveal that rape, violence against women, and femicide are serious problems in Guatemala. Also, trafficking in persons, violent attacks against LGBTI persons & gangs recruiting displaced children. Guatemala is not a safe country for refugees.
The report also reveals UNHCR had concluded that Guatemala's mechanisms for identifying & referring asylum seekers are "inadequate" - meaning that the country deports asylum seekers to their countries of persecution rather than referring them for refugee assessments.
And from Human Rights Watch's annual report: Violence and extortion by powerful criminal organizations remain serious problems in Guatemala. Gang-related violence is an important factor prompting people, including unaccompanied children and young adults, to leave the country.

In our 30+ years of service we have seen thousands of families impacted by cruel and inadequate immigration policies that have targeted them as “criminals” simply because they chose to search for home and safety in this country.
Section 1325 (which criminalizes entry into the U.S.) and Section 1326 (the criminalization of re-entry) under the Immigration and Nationality Act need to be repealed. These laws have separated families long before Zero Tolerance was implemented.
We HAVE other measures that catch those who pose a real threat to public safety, human and drug traffickers. We don’t need laws that criminalize families seeking safety and refuge! #Repeal1325and1326

NEW: A federal judge in California just issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration from returning non-Mexican asylum seekers to Mexico while their immigration cases are pending — order takes effect April 12 at 5pm PST assets.documentcloud.org/documents/5798…
The judge makes clear that his ruling isn't about whether Congress or DHS *could* do this at some point, but rather it's about the way the Trump admin tried to do it here — that the law DHS is relying on doesn't apply, and regardless, the plan doesn't do enough to protect people

We've long warned that treating us #CentralAmericans like enemy combatants, like vermin, in animalistic terms, creates grounding for violence. Use of tear gas is a litmus test for the envelope this administration can push & to fan hate & fear for support from their base. /2
