In our 30+ years of service we have seen thousands of families impacted by cruel and inadequate immigration policies that have targeted them as “criminals” simply because they chose to search for home and safety in this country.
Section 1325 (which criminalizes entry into the U.S.) and Section 1326 (the criminalization of re-entry) under the Immigration and Nationality Act need to be repealed. These laws have separated families long before Zero Tolerance was implemented.
We HAVE other measures that catch those who pose a real threat to public safety, human and drug traffickers. We don’t need laws that criminalize families seeking safety and refuge! #Repeal1325and1326
Sec 1325 criminalizes desperate, dehydrated families & unaccompanied children fleeing violence. The US/MX border is 1,954 miles and "regular" ports of entry are not easily accessible. When they are people that we’ve worked with have told us they were refused or turned away. Why?
Due to metering (which rejects asylum seekers who come to ports of entry looking for protection) and “Remain in Mexico” which forces asylum seekers to wait out their cases in Mexico make it even more dangerous.
People should have the right to seek safety.
People should have the right to enter the US when running away from violence and poverty.
People should have the right to a fair, compassionate, and decriminalized immigration process.
